A tramp with Bruce
Before we set off on our big trip the owners of our first air b&b asked if we would like to go on a tramp which Jim told me was a sort of trek- this did involve checking traps for stoats and rats but obviously I wouldn't be involved so of course we said yes ....... how hard can it be!!
I realised when Bruce asked me what walking stick I would like this would involve some uphill and maybe slippery climbs but nothing prepared me for the 3 1/2 hour trek through rough terrain uphill for about an hour when I thought I might just collapse through lack of air and lack of fitness - obviously doing a dance class once a week was not enough preparation. Oh I forgot to mention the first obstacle which was getting across the river. Bruce made this look pretty easy and did not even enter the water - after stepping deftly on 2 boulders Jim lost his balance and went in and I followed although thankfully we did manage to remain upright.
It is hard to explain just how hard the walk was going through thin paths that were thick with mud or slippery gravel and I know the photos won't do it justice.
Jim did the paperwork whilst Bruce checked the traps and put fresh eggs in, we found one dead rat in the 16 traps which are put there to try and eliminate stoats and rats who kill the Kiwi.
What an experience especially on our first day. Off to the beach tomorrow.
Just made myself literally laugh out loud when I remembered I had straightened by hair before leaving!!
